The castle was eerily quiet in the early morning hours. The sun was only just beginning to rise over the horizon and allow its rays to peek through the elegant windows of the White Castle. Halls were deserted save for a few servants that were desperately trying to get a good start on the days chores. And in the midst of the calm atmosphere was the Queen herself, making her way down the main staircase much earlier than she usually did. Sleep was not coming easy to the young Queen ever since Panthea had begun her reign of darkness in the East. Each day, the worry inside Pandora grew more and more and she feared for the lives of the people that looked to her for protection and guidance. Her skin was lighter than usual though she was known for her pale complexion. The bright, lively eyes that once were now flickered only with pain and sadness. The pressure of taking a husband didn't help the situation either. It brought great fear to think that if she passed on and Thea lived, her dark sister would be the only heir to the throne. Pandora needed a child but first she needed a suitable husband that would rule at her side as King to her Queendom.
Slipping quietly through the halls, Pandora gave her servants soft smiles as they bowed their heads in respect as she passed them by. With each passing day, she could see how they worried and whispered about her health. Thankfully it was not an illness that plagued her, only worry, pain, and a never ending ache in her belly at the thought of having to face her sister on the battlefield. Dora knew her sister would be withering away soon if she kept up the use of Dark Magic. That was the reason it was forbidden by most. As much ill feeling as Dora had toward Thea, she did not wish to see her confused sister wither away into nothing and pass on into the shadow world. Dora could feel her mood souring quickly over such thoughts but thankfully, the scent of food flooded the hall as she turned down the corridor that lead to the kitchen. If there was anything that could possibly get her mind off the horrid things that her sister was doing, it was a good breakfast.
Pushing open the already ajar door, Dora smiled into the three chubby women that were quickly working their magic in the kitchen. "Oh! My Queen! You're up early." Martja spoke up first, being the head of the kitchen staff. Dora knew they were not yet ready to serve a complete breakfast but she did not mind waiting. "Sleep did not come easy last night, Martja. Please continue. I will not get in your way," The Queen spoke quickly, closing the door slightly behind her as she watched the women get back to preparing breakfast for the castle. She always enjoyed watching them cook, a bit of a habit that she had earned when she was a young child sneaking around the castle with Adelaide. "It's a wonder Addy isn't in here stealing food from you," Dora spoke up again as she shut one of the cabinets that the women had accidently left open. Martja gave a soft snort as she pushed a loaf of bread into the fire. "I'm sure she'll be here in no time, dear. She never misses out."
Dora beamed and quickly washed her hands in a bowl of fresh water before plucking a few berries from next to Martja. A sly smile twitched on her lips as she knew Martja saw and gave her a playful glare. Perks of being Queen was that you did what you wanted when you wanted, even if it was only stealing a few berries before breakfast.
