And through the rising and falling apart, We discover who we are Sailor boy. My sailor boy. Sail home to me soon. The light tune seemed to echo across the still water. Evadne had been taught the song by a traveler a long time ago and it was one of her favorites. It wasn’t about any sort of giant battle, or lies and deceit. It was about love, the kind most people were looking for. The man had also taught her a few other tunes that she didn’t particularly care for. None were as pretty as the one about the sailor. Evadne had only seen big ships once or twice. It was a long travel to go where one might find those types of ships. Evadne was never one for travelling long distances away from her lake, but every once in a while she got the urge to travel somewhere she had never been before. For the most part she was content with her lake. With the small boats that fished and the travelers that passed by. She especially enjoyed the travelers. She loved hearing the unique stories they would have or the trinkets they had gotten from different lands. But unlike those days, today was rather quiet. No one was fishing or camping out near the lake, or so she could tell. There were times when this quiet was all that Evadne wanted. Sometimes the busyness of people passing through was too much for her. Which was probably why she could never live or stay in a city for too long. She could never get use to the constant bustle of people and action. There was always something going on or something that needed to be done. There could never be a quiet moment in the cities, even at night. Constant noise of yelling and people talking could drive someone like her crazy. She needed the forest nights where all you could hear was the distant sounds of a bug chirping. Or the soft noised of water hitting the shore. Not the sound of hoofs and wagons on stone.
Right now was one of those times that Eva was thankful for the quiet. The lake had been rather busy over the last few days, busier than it normal. A couple men had stopped by her lake a few days ago and told her about a festival that was happening in a town that was a day ride away. The festival only happened once every ten years and it was of great importance to the town. They asked permission to fish on the lake for a little bit. They had asked kindly enough so Eva was more the happy to let them use the lake. It had surprised her that they even asked her. Most fishermen didn’t bother thinking about the nymphs that were connected to different bodies of water. They took what they needed and left, Eva couldn’t complain about that. There were many of them around while they were fishing. They had lots of different kinds of boats and nets to catch the fish. Constant chatter and noise and even when the night came they camped out next to the lake. For the first couple of days she didn’t mind the presence of the fishermen. They were nice to her and she enjoyed hearing stories about their village. After a while the noise was starting to get too much for her but she couldn’t make them leave. She had already given them permission to stay and she didn’t want to go back on her word to them.
Now that they had finally left, Evadne was able to enjoy the peacefulness of the woods. She sat ontop of some rocks that were close by to the shore, her legs pulled tight against her chest. The water was at a perfect stillness that she could see her reflection as she started to make small braids in her hair. She continued to hum the tune the traveler taught to her. May the ocean’s wind bring you home again. Home again to me.

Between her thoughts, memories and broken sleeping pattern the finer details had been lost and she'd been forced into a simple state of being rather than living. Their forest had been clear save for a few who wandered through on foot or horseback either as a means to getting where they were going, collecting the various plants that grew there or merely to savor the freshness and calm the enchanted forest offered. The elf had left them to it rather than bound over and show off her friendly side still in the mindset of 'they don't deserve it' what had being friendly gotten her? A handful of secrets, a burden of weighty lies on her back and a heart that begrudgingly beat. Something was different though she had the nagging feeling of being watched, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end as if to reach out to unseen eyes, and a stray thought that someone knew her secret. Walking through the forest her hands remained out to brush over the different scrubs and bark; she liked the different textures far too much to think twice about the chance of rubbing along something thorny or poisonous - what would poison do? Nothing. Not to her at least. Forever didn't have as much meaning to an elf, 'forever' was a word reserved for the elders and their unknown ages. Breaking through more of the vast forest it became almost apparent where she was heading. Lailah didn't have many friends, she wasn't as social as the others, but the ones she did have she kept close to her heart and Evadne was one of them.
Nymphs didn't really have birthdays or they did but most were too old to remember them but Lailah made a point of always giving her something truly special a week before the parties and noise started. Trinkets were always gifted whether they be pretty stones or chips of crystal but this had taken a while, skill and effort; effort she seemingly didn't give much of lately. The elf had plans to leave her home and the world outside the forest was vast and haboured all sorts of things and while Lailah would always return time slipped by at the blink of an eye for her kind. What might have been a dragging ten years for someone could've easily have gone by as quick as a season for the elf.
The lake was peaceful as it ever was and for that she was grateful. She'd heard murmurs of men fishing there and honestly? It had put her off completely. Evadne spoke to them, listened to their tales, and once upon a time Lailah would've copied her wholeheartedly but the thought alone of listening to them prattle on was enough to make her scowl. Men knew nothing of what they done to women and they didn't bother thinking about it either. Selfish. The lot of them. It was an awful thing to tar everyone with the same brush but, even knowing that, she still done it. They'd acted without thinking of the consequences and now she was paying the price. Climbing up on the rock beside her friend she sat beside her silently at first. It, seemingly, had been forever since she'd found solace with someone but it was nice, very nice indeed but her company had always been like that. Offering her a small smile she leaned forward to kiss her cheek in greeting "nae saian luume'" she uttered softly in her native tongue "forgive me I haven't been myself" her smile twitched as if she fought it to stay on her face. Pulling the loose braided belt around her waist she opened up the front flap on the pouch she carried with her - a gift from her sister many seasons ago. Pulling out a chain from the bag the silver cage of the pendant aided it to swing back and forth; the tiny pearl setting off the piece completely. Between the cave and the beach she frequented there was always something precious to be had and this was it. A special gift for a wonderful friend. Holding it out in her hand she looked up through her hair "it's been another year, my friend" and she had hopes for many more. tag: my darling nerri words: 743 notes: oh, curse you brain! credit: template was created by rea of on the edge.

And through the rising and falling apart, We discover who we are Evadne finished one of the braids in her hair and looked down at her reflection in the water. She loved when the water got still like this; it was like liquid glass to her. There was a man once who gave her a small hand mirror; she was in awe of it. The handle was perfectly crafted with gold designs. Sadly the mirror part cracked after a few years. She had always been meaning to have someone fix it but she always seemed to forget about when she talked to people. The mirror was now sitting amongst other broken trinkets that one day would find its way into the city. The other things she had collected over the years were sitting at the bottom of her lake. Away where it could be safe and so people couldn’t get to it. She had been given a box by a sorcerer that had a protective bubble around it. It kept the box and all the items inside safe from the water. She use to keep her gifts up on land so they would not get ruined from being submerged in the water all the time. But, Evadne always had problems with people stumbling across her collections. It always ended up in problems because Evadne was protective over what was hers. Especially if someone dishonorable found her collection it never ended well since rarely they wanted to give anything back to her. It was a concept she was still not able to understand. It was hers. She had found it and collected them. She had put them somewhere for because they were hers. She didn’t understand how when people found them and wouldn’t give her thing back to her. Stealing was an odd concept to her.
Around her small fingers she began to twirl her dark brown hair. It was still wet even if she had been out of the water for some amount of time. She was enjoying just sitting up on the rock, in the sun. Her hair was rarely ever dry because she was always constantly in and out of the water. Even if she did leave the water, her hair was so thick that it would take long for it to dry. It wasn’t something Evadne would normally give that much thought too. But on certain days her mind would fix on a subject and she could be thinking about it for hours. Right now her mind was still fixated on how still the water was. Or it was until she heard the sounds of someone sitting down next to her on the rock. Evadne didn’t even have to look behind her to know who had joined her. The water she was so fixated on was the perfect mirror. She sat and stared at the reflection for a few moments, keeping her eyes on the reflection of her friend. She didn’t know exactly how many years they had been friends for but it seemed almost her entire life. Lailah had always been a good friend to her. Bringing her small gifts and listening to stories she had. The ones that other people seemed to find boring but Lailah would listen interested. A small smile grew across the nymphs face when her friend placed a small kiss on her cheek. “If you haven’t been yourself who have you been?” she asked, finally looking up from the water to her friend. “I didn’t know you could be other people”. Evadne eyed the necklace that Lailah pulled out of her bag. “Has it been a whole year already? Doesn’t feel like it has been” she said moving over slightly and wrapping her small arms around her friend.

The elf smiled a little - the action on her lips for no more than a second and before leaving without a trace - and looked away from her friend into her lap. Her eyes looked over the necklace in her hand for a short while before she spoke "I'm not sure" someone completely different, someone who wasn't the happy go lucky carefree elf Lailah was known to be, someone utterly consumed with misery and grief. Grief. Was that what it was? Grieving for company one shouldn't have had in the first place? Silly Elf she didn't need someone to reprimand her when her mind did it for her the only variation would be the softness someone else would allow her. There was no harshness to the elves, no sign of scorn or disappointment when they spoke, they sugar coated everything to the extreme. She couldn't confess to hating it but she did wish that some of their situation was somewhat sweeter to stomach instead it lay in her belly rotting her from the inside out. Nodding, unable to lie or fob Eva off with a halfway there answer, she looked back up and away from the delicate silver "nor did I until now" with five words free from her lips it became very apparent just how ashamed she was. Lailah knew it was wrong, everything about it was wrong, and yet to her it was right. The concept was simple but things were blurred when he stepped into the picture.
The comfort that came from a simple hug from her friend was staggering and she found herself too caught up in the overwhelming sense of it all to reply at a socially acceptable time frame. Leaning against her she nodded again "it doesn't," she agreed "but then it never does for us, does it?" Honestly, had it not been for the solstice festivities she wouldn't have remembered on time. Smiling at the thought of a year full of birthdays she wondered if a person would ever grow tired of them. She was always fond of her birthday especially when she spent the evening with her family and the gifts she received. Her sister typically gave her something to wear while her parents were keen to pass on family items particularly things they'd collected over the years. Her home was full of things like that; old books, stones, gems - all relatively simple items but cherished and, as she thought about leaving, it bothered her that she'd never be able to take those precious home comforts with her. Nor would she be able to see her friends as often as she liked. Concluding to herself that Eva would need to be told sooner rather than later she resigned herself to bringing it up over the next few days or at least after her birthday was over. Looking over the lake she let out a sigh of contentment.
"I'm glad the men have gone" she spoke tentatively as she knew of Evadne's love for the items she acquired and the feelings she had when they were taken from her. Men were stupid - and uncaring - and never bothered to spare a thought before they pocketed things "did they take anything?" She'd often said that she wished those men had holes in their pockets and lost the items; better lost waiting to be found again than to be put on the mantel of a thief in Lailah's eyes unless, of course, it was her doing the thieving though admittedly she hadn't stolen anything in a long time. She'd just given things away specifically her pretty ring; a ring she'd likely replace at some stage or another. Despite the war women were still material and walked around so freely with jewels adorning their fingers or in their hair and it was an open invitation for people like Lailah to turn into a magpie the only difference between Lailah and someone else was the skill involved. She was silent, her hands were swift and her fingers nimble; she'd never been caught once and she liked to keep her track record clean even if she had an insatiable habit of walking away with a guards brass buttons. With an ever growing collection she had no idea what to do with them but for now they stayed under her bed in a wooden box and were only ever pulled out when more needed to be added or for her to gush over. Looking at her pretties always cheered her up immensely and it was definitely on the cards for tonight. tag: my darling nerri words: 787 notes: love you <3 credit: template was created by rea of on the edge.
