Rincewind The First is somewhat well known for being a rather skilled Sorcerer. This was actually not the case, though his descendants will sing you his praises. He was the first of a very long line of failure sorcerer's, though he was different. He wasn't just bad at magic, magic was bad at him. Anything he tried, he failed at, and not even in a consistent way. It wasn't until a strange traveler told him to look after his box that things began to change. He was bestowed the stalker, and a very useful thing it was.
He would travel from place to place with the box, and he looked after it as best he could, even though he wasn't quite sure how. It seemed to enjoy traveling, and walking places, and carrying him if he wasn't careful. But What it really liked was swallowing people. The first time it happened, he had been shocked until it spit them back out again. That was when he started being liked as he traveled, even with the spotty magic that went off at random times. He would settle disputes with his box, not by siding with any one side, but by siding with neither and getting in the middle. Then the box would swallow everyone, and when it spit them back out they seemed to be in much better spirits to get along.
So he became known for being a peacemaker with his magic box, one his descendants mistakenly said he made work, they didn't think to connect it with the legends of the stalker, and so he became know for his epic skills in magic, and every descendant has hoped to inherit his “skill”. And, legend has it, the man who gave him the box promised one day a descendant would.
