- - YOU WERE ALONE BEFORE WE MET, NO MORE FORLORN THAN ONE COULD GET
HOW COULD WE KNOW WE HAD FOUND TREASURE HOW SINISTER AND HOW CORRECT
*IT WAS A LEAP OF FAITH I HAD TO TAKE, A PROMISE I COULD NOT MAKE

The forest echoed in the calm serenity of midday. The heat, at its peak, drove many creatures into retiring in the cool shadows of overhanging rocks and hollow trees. Insects, however, remained at work, filling the air with a busy kind of music. The elven queen stepped forward into a clearing and softly whistled. The large tiger behind her blinked its large blue eyes serenely. The queen gently touched her hand to the black and white fur of Faelwen. Hoof beats sounded in the distance and a neigh of happiness reached the queen’s ears. The copper coat of the stallion glinted into view, and the great horse skidded to a stop just in front of the queen. Gently, he lipped the skirt of the queen’s dress, urging her to join his frolics. The horse still had a playfulness that often vanished with training for being a riding horse. Completely untainted by the restraints of training and cruelty of man, the stallion was eager to please. A small, graceful smile touched the queen’s ageless facade. Faelwen yawned lazily, stretched and got to her feet. The stallion, used to the queen’s predatory companion ignored the approaching tigress. However, a firm, clawless swat upon the stallion’s nose sent him moving backward quickly, teeth bared at the large cat. Fael sat on her haunches, pleased to have reminded the stallion of the manners required when consorting with the queen. Abalin laughed at their antics and shook her head in amusement.
“Hush Fael,” she whispered softly, her voice whispering with the grace of the ages. “Aranion.”
The stallion pricked his ears, and moved forward, nuzzling the palm of the queen’s outstretched palm. She lightly ran her hand over his shoulder and moved to mount him. The great horse nickered and stamped impatiently. Lightly, she sprung from the ground, settling lightly on the horse’s back. He was a wild beast, untameable to man, but he had chosen her companionship and she had chosen his. Abalin needed no bridle or bit to control the essentially untameable being. They shared a great bond, and the promise to protect one another. Snorting once, the stallion gathered his haunches beneath him and launched himself into a control gallop. Light on his feet, he quickly navigated through the trees, winding through the large obstacles with practised ease. Fael kept up easily, trailing just behind the copper horse. Neck arched, the stallion drew himself tall, proud to be carrying the queen of a people so close to nature. However, his steps hesitated as a scent drifted into their path. Hooves hitting the road to the city, the stallion skidded to a halt, nostrils wide. The stallion stood, quivering in adrenalin from both the ride and the scent of predators. Intruders within their realm had ventured her not hours ago. Fael sauntered into the path, tail lashing angrily. Growling, she trotted forward, back into the forest. For a moment she glanced back, giving the queen a sharp look. Knowing she wanted to be followed, the queen nodded.
Without further encouragement, the stallion dashed off after the fleeting cat. Ironaus was meditating again, and alas, Abalin knew not when he was to return. Whenever moving further away from her city, she grew apprehensive. She knew this war was cresting upon their very existence, and would soon break over their peaceful lives if they were to be dragged into it. The desiccation of her people and homeland were what she desperately wanted to avoid. It would eventually be up to Ironaus and herself to decide the course of action. Until then, she would not endanger her people. Alas, her children were beginning to stray far from home, into the clutches of the darkness. The great horse pranced into the clearing where the tigress had stopped. Her piercing eyes glanced back at the queen. The place stank like wolves; she seemed to say without making a noise. A tension shifted into the queen’s body. She wished not to encounter such beings in the forest. Although they were on the side of light, she feared it was not for the chance to fight for good, but to vanquish their old foes.
