▐ HUMAN CHILDREN - Perhaps because she is familiar with the sort of loneliness any only child can relate to, Vanya has become fascinated with mortal youth and often craves their companionship. Her occupation itself has become an excuse to spend time with them, and she takes great joy in being able to do those that are poverty-stricken small favours. Their cheerful laughter and unbiased outlook on the world around them warms her soul and - aside from being able to create a welcome change of atmosphere - they also serve as an important reminder that not all humankind is born cruel and corrupt.
▐ TREASURE - Like most of her species, Vanya is also easily distracted by anything that glitters. Jewellery, coloured glass and rocks with a bit of sparkle to them draw her attention quickly, and she develops a strong urge to play with or touch whatever it is she has found. Even some human inventions have successfully managed to pique this fairy’s curiousity, although tend to get her into quite a lot of trouble when she begins carelessly meddling with them. Able to amuse herself for hours with something so simple means that she can pass time without much effort and often spends her days doing nothing but lounging about and daydreaming.
▐ THE WOODLANDS - Any magical creature is bound to be drawn by the seclusion and precious sanctuary offered by the far-reaching enchanted forests. It is a haven for those born immortal; a place untainted by the sins of humanity. It also serves to replenish Vanya’s magic and causes her magical capacity to temporarily grow, becoming twice as effective. Therefore the farther she ventures away from the protective recesses of the forest, the weaker her enchantments and illusions become.
▐ MUSIC AND DANCE - As expected, Fairies tend to be extremely playful by nature and have a strong affinity for music. Their energy levels are something to be admired, and so they spend much of their time frolicking carelessly to the lutes and harps of the satyr. It shouldn’t be surprising – therefore – that they sometimes seek out the foreign and fast-paced music the humans have invented. Disguising themselves as mortal men and woman, fairies trespass into human territory occasionally to party long through the evening and then return early the following morning exhausted and happy. It may be frowned down upon by the Elders, but it helps to relieve the Fairies’ boredom and restlessness … even keeping them from causing mischief in some cases.
▐ PLAYFUL BANTER - Vanya enjoys toying with humans, and the most satisfying manner is via wordplay. Having listened to the eloquent poetry of travelling bards for years and studying their method of twisting words and employing sarcasm and other dark humour, she has become adept at using the common language to trick and deceive foolish mortal men. Making frequent use of oxymoron’s and contradictions, she has the ability to drive any person mad with her persistence and infuriating mind games.
▐ RIDDLES - Tying in with the above, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Vanya is therefore obsessed with riddles and will sit and consider one until she has come up with a creative and thought-provoking answer. Unbeknownst to most, the single most effective way to rid yourself of a fairy’s company is to offer them a trick question which they will ponder away for hours … not even noticing if you’ve fled and left them to their own devices. Likely by the time they’ve come up with a solution, their company will have already been long gone. Unfortunately fairy's also have an answer for everything. So getting the correct solution isn't exactly their priority.
▐ THE FAUNS - Centaurs and satyrs alike are good companions for the fey folk, mostly because their energy levels are just as high and they enjoy a good joke every once in awhile. They often praise Vanya’s attempts at pranking the mortals and will even sometimes join in if the mood strikes them. They’re known to party quite a lot together and will spend the evening playing games and flirting until they grow tired and wander off to sleep.
▐ THE FEY QUEEN - If anything, Vanya respects the Queen’s decision to remain out of the human war that is currently raging. Involving their species would only prove to be an unnecessary risk to the peace and solitude they’ve been enjoying for so long. Of course Vanya has considered that it would help secure an alliance with Pandora should she emerge victorious, but there is no guarantee she would best her sister and – even if she should – there would be no promises of political security, as such a thing would depend entirely on the Queen’s personality and fondness for the Fey folk and, having wreaked havoc for so long, it’s assumed no one would be inclined to extend to them much charity.
▐ AN INTELLECTUAL CHALLENGE - To find someone who has just as much wit and poise as herself in regards to the artform that is language and the written word excites Vanya. She finds it an incredibly attractive feature, to be able to have a verbal exchange and employ the use of a polished vocabulary. Educated humans fascinate Vanya more than any other and it is the only time she is ever tempted to converse with one of them, if only to simply learn something new and interesting with which to satiate her curiosity. It also explains why she’s so determined to solve difficult puzzles, and also why she finds talking others in circles so entertaining.
▐ THE CONCEPT OF PEACE - Although far-fetched and probably out of reach by now, Vanya maintains hope that someday a peace will settle about the land and the destruction of humans may cease. Of course it’s frustrating to know that sitting back and waiting won’t do very much in terms of making that dream become a reality, however it’s for her own people’s protection to remain out of the foolhardy business of mortal beings. As much as she enjoys deceiving others, part of her still remains harmonious. She would never wish unnecessary death or ill-will on anyone that didn’t deserve it.
DISLIKES .
▐ HUMAN WARS - In her opinion, human disagreements arise for the most insignificant and selfish of reasons. Perhaps if the humans had slightly more self-respect and pride, they wouldn’t find themselves caught in bloodbaths and desecrating their kingdoms over wealth and power. Both are able to be distributed equally after all, but the shallow mindsets and extent of mortal stupidity never fails and almost always wins out over reason and logic. In the end, her precious home and her people may very well perish … and for nothing but the satiate the sadistic tendencies and need of humans.
▐ HUMAN KIND - Their attitudes and behaviour more than appal Vanya, which should have been made quite obvious by now. She would love more than anything to be able to speak to them all freely and have them listen with unbiased ears. Perhaps then they would avoid so much of the destruction they wreak so thoughtlessly. At one time this earth was calm and flourishing, but since the humans have corrupted it … everything seems to withering away to nothing.
▐ BOREDOM - There is almost nothing more aggravating than having absolutely nothing to do. If Vanya doesn’t have anything with which to pass time, she’ll always make an attempt at amusing herself with infiltrating human villages and rummaging through their things. Some might refer to this as theft, but she’s almost certain that they never use whatever it is she ends up taking anyway. Why have something interesting if you aren’t going to put it to any use? That’s such a waste.
▐ THE UNNECESSARY - Most notably unnecessary death, war and violence. She does her part to prevent this, especially when young children are affected by it and will seek vengeance on careless humans by tormenting them for hours if she ends up catching them somewhere by the forest borders. Needless waste – unless it’s a waste of time – also strikes a nerve in Vanya, finding humans who discard perfectly good food and crop disgusting. It’s as though they’re taking advantage, in a more negative and neglectful aspect, of the tools nature provides for them.
▐ BEING TRIFLED WITH - Despite the fact that Vanya enjoys tormenting others, she does not appreciate when others attempt to do the same to her. This may make her a hypocrite, and she’d gladly admit it … but it won’t have her becoming any more tolerant. She’s quite sensitive and it doesn’t take very much to get a rise out of her; temperamental to a fault when she feels she’s being toyed with. To put it simply, she believes she’s perfected the art of mind games and can’t believe when another person – especially a human – is able to contend with her in the sport.
▐ POLITICS - The very thing that ignited the human war in the first place, a disagreement between two influential figureheads over power. Vanya finds the whole thing to be quite troublesome, which is somewhat surprising considering politics are all about putting your silver tongue to good use and winning people over into your favour. One would think this would be Vanya’s cup of tea, however she believes the way humans go about it is vile and unrefined … therefore keeping her from getting herself involved without much regret.
▐ POLLUTION - Anything that tarnishes or destroys the beautiful flora and fauna that she and her fellow fey folk take great care to nurture and protect. It almost causes her physical pain when she witnesses the destruction of the trees and rivers that make up her home. Humans take far too much for granted, especially the most precious things. One day it'll all be gone and only then will they realize exactly what sort of unforgivable crime they have committed.
▐ SPECIFICALLY, MEN - The males of the human species are absolutely repulsive to Vanya. Only interested in the more carnal pleasures of life and the fact they take advantage of their women without hesitation or shred of guilt appals her. At least the women harbour kind, maternal instincts … bearing the fruit of humanity only to be treated by their ungrateful husbands. Even worse is that some of these men have no commitments to them whatsoever beyond what they can provide sexually. Men are greedy, irresponsible and deserve whatever misfortune befalls them in Vanya’s opinion. It is why her victims are almost exclusively men in the first place. There are other reasons as well of course, although they are painful to share and so she prefers not to divulge them.
▐ HELPLESSNESS - Feeling incompetent, lost or confused causes Vanya great stress and irritation. Almost always one to have a solid purpose and reason for being, it’s unbearable for her to watch something happening from afar and not being able to lend a hand. Fully knowledgeable and unafraid, Vanya feels as though her skills and talents are only being wasted when she isn’t able to employ them under the appropriate circumstances.
▐ IGNORANCE - Again, humans embody it. They’ve proven as much time and time again over many years that their greed and naïve opinions and outlooks on life have absolutely no limit. They start wars and bloodshed because of it, suffer the losses of innocent women, children and resources because of it. Honestly, she’s very surprised they haven’t taken a page out of the Elves’ book and dealt with things in a more diplomatic fashion. Perhaps everyone would have fared much better if they’d been a bit wiser in that respect.
